Below are some of the more common questions I get asked regarding the Sound Collectors’ Club, so I thought it might be useful to compile my answers here for everyone to reference. I’ll keep adding to it as new questions come to mind. You can also check the commenters questions and my responses at the bottom of the page to see if they are helpful too. However, do feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you still have any questions.
Q: I’ve paid my fee and received a receipt but I haven’t received my invite to Google Drive, Slack or Evernote yet – has something gone wrong?
A: Nothing’s gone wrong – the receipt is an automated response but the Google Drive, Slack and Evernote invites aren’t. I have to send them manually and aim to get them sent out to you asap. Feel free to email me if you need them urgently though. Likewise, when you upload contributions to the club, I have to check them first before approving them and sending you an invite, so it’s not instantaneous. Once again, feel free to nudge me if you need access to a theme urgently.
Q: What’s the best way to know when new contributions have been added to the collections without having to check every folder one by one?
A: Whenever I add a new sound to a theme folder, I tweet the track name (minus the contributor’s name) and the name of the theme it was added to, so follow @TheSCClub on Twitter for real time notifications of when new sounds have been added to the collection. Or check back through the latest tweets whenever suits you in order to work out what’s new since you last checked. If Twitter isn’t your thing though, Google Drive itself shows activity history for your account, so this could be a good way of checking what’s new too.
Q: Is it ok to upload quad, 5.1 or even 7.1 recordings?
A: Absolutely! We’ve not had many added so far but surround recordings are very welcome – obviously decoded where necessary if they use a specific system that not everyone may easily be able to access.
Q: Should I decode MS recordings before submitting?
A: Feel free to but it’s not necessary. Always upload the original MS file anyway so members can re-decode to their taste / use their own favourite decoding app if they prefer.
Q: Is there a limit to how short or long a recording should be?
A: Please use common sense here. Ask yourself what you would like in your own library: If it’s a 20 minute recording of something and it’s 20 minutes of pure gold, give us the whole file. If 15 minutes of it is you and your mate setting up the mics, it’s obviously time for an edit. Also don’t over edit recordings – sometimes I prefer having an open natural recording which I can pick out the bits I like from, rather than being given a bunch of tiny files that are cut so tight I fear the tail of sound has even been cut short. And don’t denoise recordings! Or if you do, please also share the original untreated file.
Q: Why isn’t there a _ _ _ _ _ _ theme?
A: If you want to see a particular theme created in the collection, feel free to suggest it to me – it’s great when members write the requirements of the theme for me, so that they get exactly the sounds they’re after.
Q: I’m going to upload some new files to the Club. Should I create a separate folder for each theme I’m contributing to?
A: This can be really helpful as sometimes it can be ambiguous which theme the sound was intended for.
Q: Do I have to contribute to all the themes? Is there a minimum amount of files I must contribute to a theme?
A: If you want access to them, yes. However, there’s no obligation to contribute to any themes – though that’s rather a waste of your money as you won’t get access to any of the themes. You can contribute to as few or as many themes as you wish. You only have to contribute one sound to a theme to gain access, though if, for example, it’s a car door, it’d be good to have a few different distances, interior / exterior, hard / soft etc to make it more useful, rather than just one lonely car door close on it’s own, which I may decide not to accept to the collection. Many members do contribute several sounds to a theme over time, or a ‘bank’ of sounds in one go.
Q: Is the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ theme still open to contribute to?
A: All themes are always open for contributions, and always will be. I flag the latest theme on the website for those who like to see what the latest ‘challenge’ is. Others contribute to random themes as random opportunities present themselves. Contribute however suits you best.
Q: I took a photo of the _ _ _ _ _ when I recorded it. Is this useful to contribute with the recording?
A: Yes! It’s great getting pics with the sounds when possible.
Q: I have multiple recordings for some themes. Should I edit them together, back to back, or can they be submitted as separate files?
A: Don’t merge them into one recording – better to supply them as the individual files within a suitably named folder.
Q: Is there a list of members of the Club? To see who I know?
A: Not exactly, but members can add their name and contact details to a page in The Knowledge if they wish to make themselves easily contactable by other members. Contact can be made with other members in the Slack discussion group too.
Q: Should I downsample my recordings to 48k or always provide them full resolution?
A: Always provide recordings at their full resolution.
Q: Can I get a refund? How do I cancel my subscription?
No refunds. To cancel your subscription, see: https://wordpress.com/support/recurring-payments/ for full explanation.
